With the new European regulation, EC 178/2002 of 28th
January 2002, on food safety, traceability is becoming compulsory.

Implementation examples.
Regulations in short
General requirements on Food Industry as well as overall
prescriptions on food legislation as defined in the EC
178/2002 regulation of the European Parliament
and Council, will be implemented from 1st January 2005.
The different parts of this regulation relate to food destined for human
consumption as well as animal feeds.
They apply to all movements’ types: intra European, import/export to
member/non member countries.
The regulation defines responsibilities and duties in terms of traceability,
of all participants in the Food and Animal Feed sectors (owners, producers,
distributors).
The principals and procedures of the general food legislation will be adopted
by 1st January 2007 at the latest in order to conform to some articles
from regulation EC 178/2002. Until adopted, the legislation will be applied
in line with the principals laid out in these articles. The articles mentioned
deal with protection of life and the health of people, analysis of food
risks, the principal of precaution, protection of consumers interests and
the principals of transparency (consulting and information of citizens).
